Workshop with Roger Ballen

Workshop with Roger Ballen

“It was the greatest of pleasures giving a Master Class with Dennis and Janus from the Alternative Print Work Shop. The organization was world class and their attention to detail was admirable. Furthermore, the venue choice was ideal and the participants were focused and enthusiastic. The students all commented on the excellence of the Workshop. I have given Master Classes all over the world and cannot remember one that I enjoyed more. Without hesitation, I highly recommend The Print Work Shop.” Roger Ballen, 2015.

Roger Ballen is one of the most influential and important photographic artists of the 21st century. His photographs span over forty years. His strange and extreme works confront the viewer and challenge them to come with him on a journey into their own minds as he explores the deeper recesses of his own. The Alternative Print Workshop has a long and intimate relationship with Roger Ballen, and Dennis has printed every single handprint since his first book Boyhood (1979). It is a great pleasure for APW to host this special annual Master workshop with Roger Ballen.

The purpose of this workshop is to provide access and open dialogue between participants and the artist in an informal setting. It is structured on principles of theory, practice and critique. For two consecutive days participants engage directly with the artist, and through discussion and under guidance, produce a number of artworks that relate to the artist’s own work.

The intention of this workshop is not to actively copy Ballen’s work. Instead, by engaging directly with Ballen, valuable insight into his thought processes (psyche?) and working methods is gained. The workshop consists of theory sessions on each morning, after which participants proceed to create their own work. All materials such as paint and brushes, charcoal, wire, and so forth are provided. Throughout the day Ballen moves among the participants and provide constructive guidance. Each day is concluded with a critique session.

All skill levels are welcome to enroll in this workshop, including artists, photographers, collectors, curators, enthusiasts, educators, and students.
