APW is excited to host Francki Burger’s course Self-Expression Through Photography. It is aimed at aspiring photographers who wish to refine their photographic vision and create a body of work.

In this course students will develop a thorough understanding and appreciation of photography as an art form. Art movements from the late 1800’s directly influenced artistic photography. Different techniques and aesthetics exists within each movement. By studying the History of Photography through the lens of certain art movements we can find our own creativity and inspiration.

For most of these artists and photographers, through the years, the camera acted as a tool of self-expression. The aim of this course will thus be to explore each student’s own creative vision. The photograph becomes a visual language, a tool used to tell stories of something seen, thought or imagined.

This course will extend and develop the student’s creative ideas through exploration and reflection. We will explore images together to develop a concept as well as experiment with visual ideas and techniques to create a body of work or a series of photographs.

The course is structured over 5 consecutive weeks on each Tuesday evening from 6 – 9 PM. The course consists of theory, practical and critique sessions. Included in the course is a hands-on practical session in which different alternative, and contemporary, printing techniques are discussed.

Francki Burger: Born Johannesburg, 1966. Gained a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Stellenbosch, 1988, and studied photography in Florence, Italy, at Scuola de Medici, 1989. Worked as a press photographer at Beeld newspaper until 1992. Burger assisted commercial photographers for two years, after which she worked as a professional photographer until 2008. Clients include various magazines and advertising agencies. Completed her Masters Degree in Fine Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2008 and was the recipient of the Brait – Everard Read Art Award. She also received the Tierney Fellowship Prize in 2008. Burger has exhibited locally and has curated various photographic exhibitions. She currently teaches photography at Lisof College and Tshwane University of Technology.
