BLACK AND WHITE MASTER PRINTING WORKSHOP
Draw and learn from 45 years of experience and knowledge gained in the Black & White darkroom by master printer Dennis da Silva. Among the artists that da Silva has printed for includes such renowned artists as Roger Ballen, David Goldblatt, Jo Ractliffe, Cedric Nunn, Nadav Kander, Harry de Zitter, Billy Monk, John Bret Cohen, and many more. This intensive and practical workshop is directed at those who have intermediate to substantial experience in the darkroom and who aims to refine and advance their printing technique. During the course of this workshop participants produce a number of exhibition quality prints by exploring advanced printing techniques under Dennis’ attentive guidance. Apart from a strong practical component this workshop also consists of frequent and informal discussions on B&W photography, processing and printing. In this workshop the following topics are covered: enlarging and processing equipment, interpreting negatives, choice of B&W papers, print balance, contrast control, split grading, advanced dodging and burning techniques, controlled fogging, pre- and selective flashing for tonal balance, chemistry and archival processing, archival toners as well as toners used for colour and tonal enhancement. Throughout the workshop strong emphasis is placed on presentation and producing exhibition quality prints, and final prints are spotted at the conclusion of the workshop. The workshop fee includes all materials used in this workshop. Due to space constraints we can only print 35mm negatives. Please bring a selection of 7 x 35mm B&W negatives that you will print during this workshop. It does not matter whether under- or overexposed, the more difficult the better.
